I am a California Professional Geologist and Certified Hydrogeologist with experience in hydrogeology, environmental geology, and water resource management. My work combines groundwater science with scientific computing. Over my career I have worked with private property owners and government agencies to help them manage their water resources, protect the environment, and serve their communities.
What I'm interested in
Groundwater investigation
Aquifer testing, geologic modeling, and field investigation to characterize groundwater basins.
Numerical modeling
MODFLOW models of basin behavior, built to support water management decisions.
Scientific computing
High-performance and cluster computing for environmental modeling, including system administration, reproducible analysis pipelines, and supporting the staff who use them.
Environmental data systems
Telemetry networks, ETL pipelines, and stakeholder-facing dashboards that support science-based decisions.
Presentations
I present regularly at the Groundwater Resources Association Western Groundwater Congress and at the American Geophysical Union, on topics including data-driven decision making under SGMA and tools that shorten the cycle between data collection and interpretation.
Things I've worked on
- Groundwater Sustainability Plans
- GSP development under SGMA, including the supporting aquifer testing and geologic modeling.
- Drought response for counties
- Planning and implementation of policies and procedures under California's emergency drought executive orders, including EO N-7-22 and EO N-3-23.
- Emergency well mitigation
- Well mitigation programs serving disadvantaged communities.
- A course in data-driven environmental science
- Developed and taught at UC Davis, covering the analysis and visualization of environmental data in R.
- Water resources in Rwanda
- An NSF-funded International Research Experiences for Students project through UCLA, supporting local farming initiatives in tracking and distributing water across rice production and hillside vegetable cooperatives.
Writing
- Piper Diagrams in Modern R and Python Rebuilding a 2019 figure after its dependencies were retired
- Piper Diagrams in R Plotting major ion chemistry alongside watershed maps
Background
M.S. in Hydrology from the Hydrologic Sciences program at UC Davis, and a B.S. in Earth Science from Earth and Planetary Sciences at UC Santa Cruz.
Outside of work, I am an avid cyclist.
